For sophomore Jaycoll Reyes, drone soccer has become a passion. “I was just super into it, which is really interesting. I like messing with stuff and that’s kind of how it all started,” he shared. Reyes plays as a striker and is responsible for flying the drone-shaped like a soccer ball through a hoop to score a point.
But drone soccer is not just about flying drones and scoring goals. It requires sensitivity, attentiveness, and the ability to manage multiple drones flying at high speeds. The students must constantly fine-tune and adjust the programming of their drones to enhance their gameplay.
The team’s hard work paid off when they traveled to Virginia for their first regional tournament in March and emerged as champions. Asheboro High School is now gearing up to compete in the U.S. Drone Soccer National Championship, which will be held at Virginia Tech at the end of April.
Drone sports, including soccer, are becoming increasingly popular around the world, particularly in countries like South Korea and Germany. Asheboro High School hopes to see the sport gain more recognition and popularity in the United States as well. “I think this needs more recognition, honestly,” said Reyes. “I think it will develop into a bigger sport.”
